Driftwood Collection Pilot Project

VICTORIA – The City of Victoria is removing driftwood from Gonzales Beach, in an effort to prevent beach fires.
Crews are collecting pieces less than two meters long, and thirty centimeters wide. The driftwood will be chipped and used on city paths, and in flower beds.

Each year, the Victoria Fire Department responds to nearly 200 beach fires. The Fire Department says a lot of unnecessary effort and resources are poured into fighting these fires. Deputy Fire Chief Paul Bruce says firefighters are often injured accessing the fires in the dark.

The City says the fires also have a serious impact on vegetation and the remnants are dangerous to beach goers. Beach fires are a violation of a Parks Regulation Bylaw, and can result in fines up to $2000.

Fire Safety for Young Children – DSHS Washington

For all parents and those who care for young children. Many children run away from firefighters trying to rescue them – teach them fire safety.

Kids often hide when they’re faced with danger, in a fire this can be life threatening.
Ever seen a firefighter in full gear? It can be pretty intimidating for us adults… even more so for young children.

Fire Training Gone Bad

During a controlled burn scenario to train firefighters, the siuation goes south quickly as participants learn that gasoline has been used as a accelerant to enhance the blaze. Add to the mix two trapped firefighters, their rescuer, and a pumper which won’t go into gear and you’ve got one of if a mess. (video by Lou Angeli)
