How do I get out of a lease when I feel incredibly unsafe because of numerous arson fires in my building?

There have been roughly 7 unknown fires in my building in the last 8 months including one where a car was burnt to almost nothing in our underground parking lot to piles of paper and clothes being lit on fire on different levels of the building. The fire alarms are incredibly faint and I have slept through them and been the last person out of the building twice! This has gotten to the point where someone is obviously not going to stop setting these fires. The building has not taken any precautians as far as I can see. There are no cameras nor consistant security officials. The conditions are incredibly unsafe and I feel that my life is in danger and I need to know if there is any way I can get out of my lease. Please help!

Collect the police reports and seek out a tenants union in your city. Different states, counties and cities have different rulings on this issue. You need to speak this over with someone familiar with your local laws and rules. Good luck!

I really don’t think you can without paying a penalty. It is very important that you go out and get renters insurance. Unlike people who buy homes and have insurance figured in, those who rent apartments etc. have no coverage for such things. Without renters insurance whatever you have is just gone. Good luck!
