The following is a look inside of old Fire Station 4 which served the downtown area/Civic Center of L.A. between 1948 and 2007. The LAFD station was located at 800 North Main Street and is one of 106 fire stations serving the city of Los Angeles. The station was replaced by a newer structure located at 450 Temple Street. This station, along with many others, were the subject of “Then & Now: The LAFD”. The project, produced by Westlake Signal Group visited many stations that were part of the “Prop F” Replacement project that replaced many of these classic old buildings. Then & Now: The LAFD won the Telly Award for Excellence in Documentary Film Production among many other honors and presentations. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS BUILDING HAS BEEN DEMOLISHED.

I know the old has …
I know the old has to make way for the new, but it is always sad to see buildings that could be reused for something else needlessly torn down. I guess it is not just a problem here in Los Angeles. Glad you enjoyed the films we put up. I’ll be posting a couple more as I have two editions of this series left to edit. They will be fun once they go up!

Believe me, today’s …
Believe me, today’s design cannot hold a candle to what they built then. It’s like they say, Los Angeles is a city that bulldozes its history then cries about it later when there’s nothing that can be done about it. As much as I love this city, I hate that aspect of it.

That station was …
That station was cavernous. I can’t believe they shut it down. As you probably know, the crews weren’t happy and are really not happy with their new quarters at the EOC on Temple. I went by the old station and she’s there all boarded up.
