If your the owner then check fire alarms, fire ext, fire exits, building maint. storage of paints and other flamable material. Emergency lighting and general good house cleaning. If your a renter then you should have nothing to worry about. Do check the batteries in your smoke alarm.

Smoke detectors, items sitting to close to combustion sources(heaters, water heaters, stoves, etc), piles of papers, oily rags, exposed wiring… Literally anything and everything that can cause a fire. If you have any emergency lighting you also need to make sure that they work. just press the test button. You shouldn’t have to worry too much if your place is clean and in generaly good repair, if they find anything you will usually have a grace period to get it corrected. Don’t sweat it, I’ve survived several.

Smoke detectors in working condition. Flammable liquids not properly stored. Noxious chemicals (household cleaners & such) not properly stored. Excessive flammable material piled around (to much junk). Access to egress (how easy is it to get out? Are doorways blocked?). Improperly stored fire arms & ammunition. Presence, placement and inspection date of fire extinguishers. Condition of fire sprinklers (if you have them. Many older apts don’t).

Make sure your fire extinguisher is current and the batteries in your fire alarms are working.
