Is there a regulation for having things a certain distance beneath a smoke detector?

Ive got management at my apartment complex coming to inspect my apartment as part of their annual fire safety inspections.

I installed a extra rubbermaid closet on a blank wall since our closet is tiny and I am just now noticing that the top of the shelving is up roughly a half foot beneath the smoke detector. Will I get in trouble?

Yes 18" Clearance around the detector or the detector will not function correctly. (Fire Fighter)

I’m not sure my smoke alarm is lying at the bottom of the garden and it will stay there until someone invents an alarm that doesn’t go off whenever a fly farts while passing it !
