In alot of areas …
In alot of areas the ambulance services are infact run by private companies, but are contracted out by local governments, especially in rural areas with towns that have volunteer fire departments. However this doesnt mean that its any less effective then towns that have fire departments and ambulance services that are payed for by tax money. Your still paying out the regardless of wheter your in an ambulance run by tax dollars or run by a private company, the hospital screws you on the bill.

They found that the private company was able to provide the service far cheaper than contracting with another local government. The private provider explains why:

Before you go and make you fire department a pay as you use system, maybe you should google the history of the fire service. You see, in the early days of America, fire insurance companies would pay the first private fire ‘company’ to arrive at the structure fire to put it out. This would cause fist fights in the street when two competing fire ‘companies’ would arrive to a fire at the same time. I believe there is a saying “those that fail to study history are bound to repeat it”
