You have to start out with some firefighting experience before making chief. It takes several years to aquire the training for it. Start out by taking the test as a firefighter then you will start getting the training you need. You also should look at a degree in Fire Science or Business management both would be helpfull. But you will need to get the basics first being a fire chief isnt easy and its unlike the private sector manager the fire chief does have to know more than his or her firefighters. If there is a volunteer department close to you, look into volunteering your time also they will help with training in the basics.

Also just note most fire chiefs have at least 10 years experience in the fire service before making Chief.
