Why do some Fire Departments send both a Fire Truck and a Rescue Unit to the calls they respond to?

Posted by admin on May 19th, 2010 and filed under fire rescue | 4 Comments »

In the city were I live Albuquerque, when there are Rescue calls the Fire Department sends both a Fire Truck and a Rescue unit a majority of the time to medical calls. Is there a logical reason for sending both units even if it is a sick call or down and out. I can see the reason for sending both to a car crash but for minor medical calls I don’t get it.

Many different reasons make up the logic. First Say they run on the medical call and the person is 600lbs+, alot of manpower is needed, second alot of time when somthing is called in you never know until you get there what it is, I have ran on a call that came in as "sick person" then you get there and it was a cardiac arrest. Third and best reason is that way if you get a fire or wreck call while your on the medical you have both units together, and have all the manpower from the station together without having to run back to station to switch units then turn around and drive right back the way you came. Hope this makes since, It does to fire personelle who have actually had to do this, saves time.
