Does every fire department in a town have a fire chief or is there only 1 to every city?

There is only one Fire Chief per department. While there may be several stations throughout a city or or town, there is only one Fire Chief. Each station usually has a Captain or Lieutenant that is in charge of the station and a Battalion Chief that is in charge of several stations. Some departments also have District Chiefs.

Is it true that once you give birth you can leave it at a fire department anonymously?

My local newspaper had an article about a woman leaving her newborn on the steps of a church-needless to say she’s going to jail. After reading that I remembered someone telling me that you can leave a newborn in either a fire, police department or court house steps (anonymously). Is there any truth to this? And what is it with these women leaving their newborns in public places? Do they think someone will just take it in and nurse it as their own?

Yep, every state has passed this law. Hospitals, police stations, and fire stations are usually among the approved places. The baby usually has to be five days or newer.

The idea is not to encourage people to "dump" their babies like laundry (that other answerer is a jerk), but instead to encourage desperate people to not leave their babies in dumpsters because they don’t feel like they have another option.

This saves lives. Police, fire fighters, and hospital workers can care for a child properly while things are sorted out. I don’t like that people abandon their children, but prefer warm fire stations to dumpsters.

/what do you think about the Tennessee fire department that let a house burn, killing 3 dogs and a cat?

Was the fire department right to let the house burn, and those animals burn to death, because the home owner forgot to pay the $75 fee? Or would the town have been better off having a fire department of its own? Which system do you think offers you personally more safety, a private fire department, or one your town pays for with taxes?

Plain and simple, they are morally bankrupt. When a fire department decides that they should let a home be destroyed by fire when they could have saved it…just because the homeowner didn’t pay a $75 charge…then it is time to replace the entire fire department as their values are seriously skewed, and not in a good way! And by the way, a number of pets died in that fire. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get charged with animal abuse since they refused to rescue them. Good luck and God bless.

Can fire department or police vehicles be left with the engine running while the officer goes in for a bagel?

Someone from the fire department drives to my school in a fire department SUV every day at 2, parks in a handicap spot and leaves the car running for an hour. Is he violating any laws or rules?

Our police vehicles have an ignition override switch. When activated the officer can remove the keys but the engine continues to idle. Power also continues to be available for the emergency light bar and vehicle lights, the in car computer and printer, the radar and vascar, door spot light, dome light, digital trunked radio, VHF radio and the gps transponder.

We do have a state law that says you can not leave a motor vehicle idling unattended without the ignition locked and the keys removed. So our vehicle complies with the law when the ignition override switch is activated.

If the brake pedal is depressed while in this mode the engine cuts off and the horn begins to honk. This feature is to protect the vehicle if the prisoner managed to get into the driver seat while the officer is finishing up the on scene investigation.

Can you work only as a single role paramedic in a fire department?

Posted by admin on October 25th, 2010 and filed under fire department | 2 Comments »

Can you be just a Paramedic and not a firefighter and work for a fire department? If so, what is the average salary?

there is no one answer. it depends on the city, county and how the fire department is set up. NYFD has single role Medics as the FD runs all ambulances, but in my area all ambulances are run third party, so no single role medics in the FD. As a result you will see vastly different pay scales which depend on the variables I mentioned before from one area to another.
