When is a fire-o-matic switch required?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fire inspection | 1 Comment »

An inspection of a house I want to purchase noted that neither of the furnaces were equipped with fire-o-matic switches. I assume these switches turn off the gas to the furnace if there is a fire. Would this be covered in local building codes or in the local fire code? I am in Rhode Island.

Ask the people who prepared the report. It is likely a heat sensitive control to shut down the furnace if there is overheating in the furnace. This could occur, for instance, if the thermostat called for heat and a fan belt were broken. A temperature limit switch could shut down the furnace, to prevent fire.

How can I start a fire with chemicals?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fire | 2 Comments »

I was at a meeting last year and some people were talking about starting a camp fire with two chemicals. One was a liquid in a cup, and the other was a powder suspended above the liquid and then dropped in which then created a reaction starting a fire. I’d like to do the same "trick", can you help?

Although this fire making technique is not primitive technology, it is worth mentioning in terms of survival skills. Fire can be produce by chemical reaction using potassium permanganate mixed with antifreeze from a car radiator or glycerin. Potassium permanganate used to be found in first aid kits and was utilized as a mild antiseptic. Adding a few drops of antifreeze or glycerin to potassium permanganate will cause the mixture to instantaneously burst into flames.
CAUTION: If the chemical reaction is not successful, do not neglect the mixture because it may start to burn. Always dispose of any unsuccessful attempts by burying the mixture with sand and dirt, then pouring water on the spot. Bury any flammable materials that have been in contact with the chemicals. Also pour water on the buried materials.

If your house caught on fire, what would you rescue first?

After your Rembrandt etchings that is.

The cats and my stash of "important" papers. Don’t have a Rembrandt etching, but do have a Renoir; I suppose I could snag that on the way out, too. :)

Can you volunteer for a professional fire dept. if you are employed by them?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fire training | 1 Comment »

I work for Winston-Salem Fire Dept. in North Carolina. We are asked to volunteer for fuinctions such as agility test, training fires,etc.. Most believe this will help in obtaining promotions.

Any functions not directly related to your employment as a firefighter, which occur during your off-duty time, can be volunteered for, such as the times you list in your question. On our department, we volunteer to help with community projects, help with a local bingo fundraiser (how we pay for extras at firehouse), and other activities. As far as promotions, it always looks good if you are there to help with the "extras", not just there for your shift.

Why wont they let me volunteer for the fire department?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fire department | 1 Comment »

I’m 16, pretty self conscience and motivated to be pushed as far as I can go. I always wanted a job helping people when they need it most. My friend (who is 21 now) was able to join the fire department for training when he was 16, why cant I?

Why would they raise an age limit to pursue someones dream? And what will I do in the mean time?

If you are really motivated why are you becoming stuck on this one issue. You sound like an intelligent person, I’m sure you don’t need to be told why 16 is often considered young for fire department training. My question is why not start doing other things that will prepare you for a career in fire fighting. That can be anything from working for the parks district to becoming a boy scout.

How do you break the glass on a fire alarm?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fire alarm | 4 Comments »

if there was a fire and you had to break the glass on the fire alarm before pulling the handle how do you hold the hammer to break the glass so you wont get hurt? If your son was at the fire alarm what advice would you give him with regards to breaking the glass? Would you need to take a practice swingswing? How far away from the alarm do you need to stand to break the glass? When you pull the handle how do you clear the glass so you won’t get cut if there is some glass remaining?

You can always take off your shirt, wrap it around your hand and bust through the glass.

Find the recoil velocity of the hunter if he fires the rifle horizontally?

Posted by admin on April 30th, 2010 and filed under fires | 1 Comment »

A hunter on a frozen, essentially frictionless pond uses a rifle that shoots 4.20 g bullets at 965 m/s . The mass of the hunter (including his gun) is 72.5 kg, and the hunter holds tight to the gun after firing it.

Part A:
Find the recoil velocity of the hunter if he fires the rifle horizontally.

Part B:
Find the recoil velocity of the hunter if he fires the rifle at 58.0 Degress above the horizontal.

Conservation of momentum
Initial momentum = 0
=
Final momentum = mbullet vbullet – mhunter vhunter

So the hunter’s speed is:

vhunter = mbullet vbullet / mhunter

If the rifle fires up at an angle theta, then only the horizontal component matters. The ice absorbs the vertical impulse.

So vhunter = mbullet vbullet cos (theta) / mhunter
