How do you start a fire at a beach fire ring?

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under fire | 4 Comments »

My friend and I are throwing a party at the beach and we are having smores at a nearby fire ring. I’ve never started a fire before. So what materials do I need and how do I do it, and where can I purchase the materials? People have been telling me to use "fire starter" logs. Please give me info. THE PARTY IS THIS WEDNESDAY!! (the 20th)

You can get starter logs at any grocery store.

Lets do this the easy way… Gather wood up before it gets dark out, or buy a few bundles from the grocery store before you go to the party. Put the starter logs in a pile, add fire, and gradually add more wood on top once those have started to burn down. Don’t add too many at once- that will smother the fire. A general rule of thumb is to wait until everything has at least started to burn before adding more wood. Just keep throwing logs on, and your fire should go all night.

Heres another trick for you.. If it starts to go out, CAREFULLY toss on some lamp oil or citronella. Do NOT use gasoline. Gasoline will flare up and burn anyone too close to the fire. The person throwing it generally looses at least their bangs and eyebrows, so just don’t do it.

Check with your town before you have your fire- in many places, its illegal to have a fire without a permit, and you can get hit with a stiff fine for doing it.

im joining a volunteer fire department how hard is training?

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under fire training | 3 Comments »

im joining a fire department as a volunteer and want to know how easy or hard it is im in really good shape so im not scared if its hard but if youve ever done this how hard is it

It depends on the training you do. Some of the training you’ll have to take is mostly bookwork with little physical activity. When you start training to go into fires is when things start to get rough. Personally I didn’t think the interior firefighter training was too hard, but there were some in the class who struggled. If you’re in good shape you should be fine. When you get into some of the more advanced firefighting classes things can become hard. Especially when you get into different types of Rescue. The best advice I can give you is to study and practice every chance you get until it becomes second nature to you.

How to join the fire department in Hawaii?

Need any advice on how to join the fire department in Oahu HI. Benn to a few sites and none say they can find what I was looking for. Any advice or answers would be greatly appreciated.

Well im not part of the firefighting business but I got a couple websites:
http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/hfd/index.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honolulu_Fire_Department
videos:

HFD gets a lot of applicants the biggest I heard(not to long ago) was 5,000 people wanting to join. Each recruit class has about 20-30. So it must be really hard to get in to this department. It would be good if you had a college degree so you won’t be rejected like most people without one. Its not required but if you want to be hired by HFD its best you do.

Good Luck hope you get it!

How do you pull a fire alarm handle down in a fire?

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under fire alarm | 3 Comments »

On a fire alarm it says pull down. Do you pull the handle straight down or do you pull it out and then down? When you are pulling the handle down do you pull it slowly or quickly? Why is it that some people would pull it at a slower pace as opposed to others?

The arrows on the handle point down does this mean you pull the handle straight down without pulling it out and down? How would someone know to pull the handle out and down why don’t the instructions say to pull the handle out and then down? Why are there arrows how does this help someone pulling it down?

Just grab it and pull it down man.
You’ll figure it out.

I need to rent out my flat and all furniture is bought after 1996 but some do not have fire safety labels?

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under fire safety | 2 Comments »

I have a sofabed with a permanent label but the mattress does not have any fire-safety label

I have a 2 seater with no display label but it has a permanent label.

I still have receipts for both, is this any good or do I have to get rid of the furniture?

You need to contact your local trading standards for a definitive answer.

But, there is a difference between the permanent label and the display label. As far as I can see from the Regs the display label is only required at the point of sale for new items. As you are not selling new items then this requirement does not apply to you.

Your furniture has permanent labels so should be OK. Mattresses are not required to have permanent labels, so the fact that yours does not have one is not necessarily a problem. However, I am not sure if there are other requirements.

If the mattress is part of the sofa bed then I would guess it will be OK. However, as I said you are best to check with trading standards to be certain.

where can i view two different hole in the wall gas fires?

I want to see on display a Valor Homefire Eminence gas fire and a Wonderfire Allure. Both are hole in the wall gas fires. I need to know a stockist who has either of them. Can you help?
I want to see them, or one of them, in a showroom so that I can get a better idea of what they actually look like instead of just a picture on the internet before I decide which one to buy.
