Is a fire inspection fee legal to charge?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under fire inspection | 3 Comments »

Our business recently had a fire inspector stop by unannounced and perform a fire safety inspection of our business and all the businesses around us. We passed and thought nothing else of it until we got a bill a month later from the city! The bill was for $55 for a ‘Fire Inspection Fee’. It seems to me that the fee labeled ‘FIRE’ we pay on our utility bill every month would cover things like that.

I called the city attorney about the legality of it and he didn’t know anything but that every business was billed for the inspection. I likened the fee to a police officer showing up on your doorstep to make sure everything is okay, even though you never called for them and he laughed and agreed. Now… I have the right to refuse a police officer from entering my home or place of business without a search warrant, but I don’t have the right to refuse a fire inspector and am then required to pay for the service?

IS THIS LEGAL?

yes it is legal and yes it is theft

What is the difference in Fire Academy and taking Fire courses in college for becoming a firefighter?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under fire | 1 Comment »

I’m planning on becoming a firefighter for SFFD I’m gona be going to SF city and I know they have a Fire Academy but is that something separate I have to sign up for or is it part of the fire courses they provide?

They are separate.

The Fire Academy is about six months, give or take based on how often you meet. The course is the basic requirement that you will need to become a firefighter. It should include your FFI and FFII (or equivalent training for your state) Haz-Mat Ops, and may include an MFR certification.

You have to have those certifications to become a firefighter.

The college courses you are looking at apply to a degree in firefighting and are not required to become a firefighter, although they certainly increase your chances of getting a job and make you a more knowledgeable firefighter.

For a degree in firefighting, you can usually go for a one year certificate program, an associates or a bachelors.

Hope that helps.

In live fire police training why don’t they use plasma TVs instead of posters?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under fire training | 3 Comments »

When police and military do urban/hostage training they use posters to shoot at. It would offer more flexibility and they could change the situation pretty fast and provide better training if they swapped the posters for plasma TVs, and with HD, they could get more realistic.

I don’t think they could afford to shoot through $1000 plasma TV’s like that.

Does anyone have a fire chief outdoor wood burning furnace?

We are thinking of buying one and we would love some feed back. Good or bad.

I don’t have one, but my boyfriends’ parents do and they love theirs…it’s a really cool thing and saves a lot of money in the winter… the ONLY thing is that a lot of people ask what the heck it is, because it kinda looks like a weird-looking dog house…lol

How do you program a scanner to use fire tone out for your local fire department?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under fire department | 1 Comment »

Some scanners have fire tone out that is a feature that lets you know when a fire department gets a call scanners linke the BCD396T have this but how do you program fire tone out
some scanners can notify you when a specific station gets a call scanners like the BCD396T have this its called fire tone out you have to get the station frequency though, but i dont know how to program or get those frequencies. I know how to get the city frequencies but not specific station frequencies

most scanners can’t transmit, they only have a receiver in them so you can’t transmit the fire tone out. you have to get an actual radio transceiver. I think that’s what you’re asking, your question wasn’t quite clear on terminology. unless you mean two-tone page. if that’s the case you’ll have to check your manual for the correct programming. if that’s the same scanner you have the manual is online at uniden’s website.

How does the number system work for Fire Alarms. What constitutes 4 alarm, 8 alarm, etc?

Posted by admin on January 30th, 2010 and filed under fire alarm | 2 Comments »

What is the highest alarm number a fire can be classified
And what makes the difference
Thank you.

It is specified per fire department.

"In New York City, dispatchers send out 25 units and 106 firefighters for a two-alarm fire, 33 units and 138 firefighters for three alarms, 39 and 168 for four, and 44 and 198 for five."

There is no maximum alarm (except in that there’s only so many firefighters). The highest-alarm fire in New York City was the 17-alarm response to the 9/11 attacks. (The previous highest alarm was a 16-alarm response to the 1993 bombing of the WTC.)

"New Image Classic Gas Fire" CG No 32-210-14

you probably require installation and servicing instructions to ensure the corgi registered engineer can ensure it meets the requirements and how to service it and spare part numbers if required. if you know the make (eg glowworm, baxi, etc) you could try their website and download the details required.
hope this helps
